Large Vintage Pairpoint Yellow Rose Pedestal Paperweight with Engraved Base

Large Vintage Pairpoint Yellow Rose Pedestal Paperweight with Engraved Base. This is a large vintage Pairpoint pedestal paperweight with a wonderful yellow rose in the center. The rose has sixteen petals in a 4+4+3+3+2 pattern. The innermost two petals are tiny. There are also eight dark green leaves, four large and four skinny. The paperweight is set on a pedestal base, which is engraved with a grapes and ivy pattern. I believe the engraving was done by either Ed Poore or his mentor Carl Schweidenback. It is signed on the bottom of the paperweight portion with a Pairpoint dark blue and white “P” signature cane. The picture does not do justice to this paperweight. Ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. Pairpoint Glass has a long history extending back to its earliest origins with Mount Washington Glass in 1837. Owners and locations changed a number of times and the name Pairpoint was first used in the 1890s. The original Pairpoint companies were located in New Bedford, Massachusetts. In 1938, it was reorganized as Gunderson Glass Works by owner Robert Gunderson and later renamed the Gunderson – Pairpoint Glass Works in 1952. The name was acquired by Robert Bryden and the company moved briefly to East Wareham, MA in 1957 where it operated as the Pairpoint Glass Company. They leased production facilities in Spain. The last New Bedford factory burned down in 1965. In its latest iteration, Robert Bryden moved Pairpoint to Sagamore, Massachusetts in 1970. It continues to operate at that location today, with new owners in 2015. Schweidenback started work as a glass cutter at the Watson Company in Attleboro, Massachusetts at age 14 in the 1920s. His apprenticeship started at Watson and finished at the Pairpoint Glass Works in New Bedford, Massachusetts. His father was also a glass cutter at Pairpoint. After working at Pairpoint for a number of years he went to the Silver City Glass Company City in Meriden, Connecticut, known for its copper wheel engraving. Later in his career Carl worked at the new Pairpoint Glass in Sagamore, Massachusetts where he mentored Ed Poore in the early 1970s. Edward Poore has had over 35 years experience in the field of glass engraving and restoration, working at Pairpoint and in his own studio The Crystal Workshop in Sagamore, Massachusetts. He is an artist in his own right and has also worked in collaborations with many glass artists. He trained at Pairpoint Glass Works under the tutelage of Carl Schweidenback. He recently retired and his son James Poore has taken over from Ed. Both Ed and Jim were featured in the 2009 show at the Sandwich Glass Museum Two Generations of Glass Engravers, Cutters and Sculptors – Edward and James Poore. Very Large Size : Just over 3 1/4″ diameter by 4 5/8″ high. The engraved base is just over 3 1/2 diameter. The base is engraved with a grapes and ivy pattern. No damage found, no chips, cracks, or scratches. There are some tiny bubbles in the glass. Signature : Signed on the bottom of the paperweight portion with a Pairpoint blue and white “P” signature cane. Allan’s Paperweights is owned by Allan Port. If in doubt, please check with me first.
