This weight is a red Sandwich-type rope rose with bud on a sapphire ground. The rose with three sepals is set atop a green stem with two leaves on the left and one on the right. A branching stem on the right ends with a sheathed bud, and has a leaf of its own. A gold foil bee is placed on the top left leaf. The ground is a deep sapphire, although it appears more amethyst in most of the photos due to the transmitted light from the flash. The side view provides the most accurate ground color. The base is ground concave and polished, with a gold foil “K” signature in the center. The weight is 2.3″ in diameter and 1.7″ tall. There are small bubbles along one section of the bud’s stem that can be seen in the closeup photo of the bee. These bubbles are more visible when viewed from the side, almost disappearing when the weight is viewed from the top. (1919 – 1992) has been referred to as the father of the American paperweight renaissance. A self-taught glass worker, he produced some of the finest paperweights ever made over his six decade career. His work rivals the classic French glass houses that he was emulating, and his rediscovery of lost techniques of glass working paved the way for the modern artists of today.
