Short History of Charles Kazium Jr. Charles Kaziun has been called the “Father of the American Paperweight Renaissance” for his influential role in the modern era of paperweight making. Charles began his 6 decade long career in the art glass making field at an early age of 14. One of the pioneers of paperweight making, Charles Kaziun began working in 1940s to recreate the lost techniques of the French glass factories. His work includes a wide range of millefiori, lampwork, sulphide. And crimp flower paperweights, as well as faceted perfume bottles and other related Art Glass items. Born on May 18. 1919 he became a renowned Art Glass Artist who challenged the boundaries of creating works of art glass that to this day are still admired and inspiring. He was able to perfect the art of miniaturization and created some of the most amazing detail in such a small space. During his lifetime he used a large variety of “K” signature canes. His later work often contains, in addition to the signature cane, a small 14k gold foil “K”, embedded on the underside of the weight. Died in January, 1992. In the early 1800′s, Chico was an important center for gold mining, railroad construction and ranching. By the late 1800′s, Chico had grown into a charming Victorian community. The quaint atmosphere soon created one of the most distinctive valley towns in California. About 1893, one characteristic home with a carriage house was built in the historic Oriental section of town. Located between Orient Street and Flume Street, this site was destined to play an important role in the story Orient & Flume. Early work of the studio was directed toward recreating the silver-luster of iridescent glass of such turn-of-the-century artists as Tiffany, Steuben, and Loetz. In time, this led to their current creations of intricate, three-dimensional design’s encased in clear glass. By 1973 the carriage house proved to be too small for a rapidly growing business and was relocated to 2161 Park Avenue. The work of Orient & Flume can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian Museum, the Chicago Art Institute, the Chrysler Museum, the Corning Glass Museum and fine stores and galleries throughout the world. LOVELY and Rare Vintage Frit RAINBOW COLORED CANDY CANES Art Glass Paperweight by Edward Rithner. (Circa 1910 – 1935) I see some gather lines which are typical of weights from this era. I see a few tiny flea bites and a few light scratches and most are hard to see. I see several tiny controlled bubbles here and there that add to the delicate motif. All of the Colorful Candy Cane Rods are gently resting on a Wonderful Shade of Cobalt Blue Frit Glass. This Amazing Work of Art Glass is much better seen in person because the pictures do not do it justice. These Frit Designs by Rithner are Very Scare and hard to come by. He may have been trying to copy the Baccarat Macedoine type weights. I consider this Amazing Work of Art to be in Very Good Original Vintage Condition. It has a slightly concave frosted bottom that shows some normal shelf wear to the basal rim. This is a Magnum Size Paperweight and it Measures 3″ Diameter by 2 1/4″ Tall.
