Perthshire PP46 Heart Pattern Closepack Millefiori Paperweight. This Perthshire millefiori paperweight has a closepack design in the shape of a heart in the center with a heart shaped border of identical amber and white canes. The design is set on a translucent ruby red ground with a garland of purple and white canes on the outside. It is signed on the base with Perthshire’s complex “P” signature cane. It also has its original worn Perthshire paper label “PERTHSHIRE PAPERWEIGHTS CRIEFF SCOTLAND” on the base. The paperweight has one large top facet. Every collector should have one of these. The PP46 was made with a heart design from 1981 to 1999. Please Note: The stand shown in the pictures is not included with the paperweight. It is shown for illustration only. Note on white glare : Please ignore the white areas, they are glare from the light. Perthshire was a small company in Crieff, Scotland that was devoted to the creation of quality glass paperweights. They stopped production in January 2002 after more than 30 years of production. Their paperweights were consistently high in quality and yet remained reasonable in price. The birth of Scottish paperweight making is credited to the glass making family of Salvador Ysart, who moved to Crieff, Scotland in 1922. They worked first at John Moncrieff Ltd and made the earliest Scottish paperweights during that period. In 1946 Salvadore and his sons Augustine and Vincent founded Ysart Brothers Glass and produced glass wares under the Vasart label. Salvador Ysart died in 1955 The company name was later changed to Vasart Glass. Stuart Drysdale was hired manage the business side of the enterprise in 1960. The company evolved into a new company Strathearn owned by Teachers Whiskey. In 1967 Drysdale was sent a magazine article on antique paperweights (Woman’s Day, July 1965). The inspired him to try to produce weights comparable to the French antiques. With this goal in mind, he and several of the glass workers left Strathearn to found Perthshire in 1968. Size: 2 9/16″ diameter by 1 11/16″ high. The base is ground concave. There is one large top facet. Condition: Excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or scratches found on inspection. The label is worn. Signature: It is signed on the base with Perthshire’s “P” signature cane. Allan’s Paperweights is owned by Allan Port. If in doubt, please check with me first. Mandé Miniature Closepack Millefiori Paperweight. Circa 1841 – 1857. This is an antique St. Mandé closepack millefiori paperweight. I’m describing this as a closepack because the canes are all upright, not tipped over. However there are some open areas. There are many different and interesting canes in this paperweight. The bright yellow cane is something rarely found except in St. The glass has a very slight grayish tint and has a lot of bubbles. The design is set high in the dome. And there is a a characteristic groove low down on the side. The condition is very good to excellent with a few scuffed areas on the dome, but there is plenty of glass and it could be restored. I wouldn’t do so because polishing might remove the St. Mandé characteristic groove on the side. A rare example for the advanced collector. Please Note: The stand shown in the pictures is not included with the paperweight. It is shown for illustration only. Very little is known about the St. This was a small one pot glass factory in the village of St. Operated by Joseph Nocus, the factory was in operation from 1841 to 1857. During that period the factory won several awards and mentions in trade journals. When signed, the weights have an StM signature cane. Paul Hollister incorrectly referred to the factory as St. Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. But George Kulles persisted and eventually identified the correct name in 1991. There is a section on St. Mandé in the Kulles book. Identifying Antique Paperweights – The Less Familiar. Since then additional documentation and evidence has been uncovered. There have also been several articles on St. Notably in 1991, 1999, and newer issues. Originally it was estimated that only a few hundred St. Mandé paperweights exist, but in recent years many more have been correctly identified. Very Small Size : Just over 1 7/8″ diameter by just under 1 1/2″ high. The base is ground concave. Condition : Very good to excellent condition with a few scuffed areas on the dome. There is plenty of glass and it could be restored. I wouldn’t do so because polishing might remove the characteristic groove on the side. The glass has a lot of bubbles. Signature : Unsigned, but I guarantee this to be an authentic antique paperweight from St. I have consulted with other experts and they agree with this attribution. Perthshire Paperweight 1981F Amber White Double Overlay with Georgeous Closepack Millefiori within the weight. It is referred to as 1981H, the H letter signifying that it was considered the most elaborate and difficult to make paperweight of that alphabet series for that year. It is a gorgeous double overlay paperweight with a closepack millefiori design within. The overlay colors and the intricacy of the millefiori are what make this weight particularly appealing. It is approximately 2 and 3/4 inches across. It has one top facet, six large and six small facets. The facets perfectly allow visibility of the millefiori closepack, and magnification of the top facet is perfect. This particular paperweight is from a very limited edition of 152. There are many characteristics of this paperweight which make it highly unusual. First is the unique butterscotch or amber color of the double overlay, the lower overlay being a pure contrasting white. There is no other Perthshire paperweight with this color. Also, each of this series differs from the others in the faceting and the etching beneath the amber to the white. The faceting can be varied with from four to six side facets and this one has the more complex six large facets and an additional six smaller facets beneath the larger ones. IT HAS A TOTAL OF TWELVE FACETS, MORE THAN DOUBLE THE USUAL FOR THIS PAPERWEIGHT! The etching of white on the weight is unique as well from weight to weight in the series. This one has six very small amber to white facets which are not cut to clear in between the large ones for accent of color. The Perthshire craftsmen were given free reign to design and cut these 1981F weights differently, making each unique from the others. I have a second paperweight from this edition which looks so different from this one in its faceting and cutting of the overlays. Both were hand chosen by me years ago for their differences, but it is now time to trim my personal collection. Last, inside is a magnificent millefiori closepack of beautiful colored canes and striation of those canes which can be seen through the side facets and the base. This papereight is in excellent as new condition with its P1981 identity cane in the base. Its Perthshire Paperweight sticker still is present. THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS. A large Closepack of millefiori canes forms the cap of this classic Mushroom paperweight. An outer ring of Blue and White tubes is pulled down to form the mushroom. The millefiori canes include two White roses with Red centers and a rare unusually-shaped White Rose without a center cane. The weight is BIG at 3-1/8″ in diameter and 2-1/4″ high. It has one top facet, six large side facets, and a star-cut base. There is one light scratch on the top facet, one tiny nick to the edge of one side facet, and a tiny bit of very light surface wear on the lower sides. The base is star cut and shows light wear appropriate with the age. Over all condition is excellent to near prefect. Satisfaction guaranteedBID WITH CONFIDENCE.
