This paperweight represents, apart being the only one known with murrine of Moretti, a kind of little mistery. Pietro Bigaglia made paperweights mainly to recover the processing waste from the production of filigree and twisted canes, adding glazes and aventurine. The murrine were mostly supplied by G. Battista and Jacopo Franchini. This production lasted from 1845 up to 1848, when Bigaglia stopped the making of filigrana and twisted canes. The strange things are that the murrine (two portraits of King Vittorio Emanuele III) included in the paperweight were created in 1888 by L. Moretti and that P. Bigaglia died in 1876. We can suppose the paperweight was made using old leftovers of filigree and twisted rods, to copy the paperweight of P. Bigaglia and contemporary murrine were inserted, perhaps by the Moretti themselves. These charges are under the buyers responsibility.
