Vintage Paul Joseph Stankard (b1943) Botanical Nature Handblown Glass Paperweight A193. Made in USA 1984. 3 5/8″ Diameter x 2 3/8″ Tall, 1 lb 8.3 oz. Closed and Open Wild Yellow Rose Flower Buds on Stems. On Sandy Mossy Ground. Internal’S’ Mark Cane in the Center Bottom. Etched on Bottom: A193 1984. Paul Joseph Stankard is an American artist, flameworker (or’lampworker’) and author. Stankard was born April 7, 1943, as the second of nine children in an Irish Catholic family. He lived in North Attleboro, Massachusetts in his early years. In his autobiography, Stankard chronicles his early struggles with dyslexia, which made classroom learning difficult. His high school transcripts showed him graduating near the bottom of his class, mistakenly assigned a low IQ score. In the book, Stankard describes the pressure and stigma of being labeled a slow learner by an educational system that at the time was not aware of dyslexia. In 1972 he discovered the concept of dyslexia and started to develop a self-directed learning program that heavily relied on books on tape (audible books). His 50-year learning journey lead to two honorary doctorate degrees and allowed him to overcome his low self-esteem and learning disabilities to become one of the foremost glass artists of his generation. Excellent used vintage condition. No chips, cracks or repairs. Normal wear from age.
I’m guessing at the age of this paperweight and also the maker, but I’ve seen others similar to this one and they’ve been created by Fratelli Toso studio in Murano. As to the age, I believe it’s from the 1950′s or 1960′s. Below the clear glass sits a deep dark green mound, so dark that it looks almost black. Irregularly spaced millefiori florets in different designs and colors are placed about the mound. The most vibrant colored floret is centered near the top. This paperweight is pre-owned and vintage and due to this fact does have a few small issues. There is one longer, faint scratch (about 1 long) on it that can be felt more than seen and a few barely perceptible tiny scratches. Of course there are the usual fine scratches on the flat bottom. I didn’t notice the scratches until I took it outdoors to take the photos in the bright light. There is also a slight dip in the glass which was during the creation process. The paperweight is approximately 2 1/4″ tall x approximately 2 3/4″ wide at its widest. Thank you for viewing this item, and please check out my other listings.

This gorgeous colorful paperweight has 3 flowers in the middle in red, orange and pink. They are above a green mound with controlled bubbles all around it, and on the base, around the bottom there is a red ruffled ribbon effect (see photos). The entire paperweight is faceted and comes to a point at the top (see photos). There are no maker marks on the bottom or stickers to attribute it to a maker. This piece measures almost 3.75 inches tall. There are some minor chips on the bottom facets (see photos), there are also scratches on the bottom, and a few on the main facets (see photos).
