Egg shaped hand carved paperweight. The handcrafting of cased crystal is a unique and specialized art. Waterford travels to Hungary to seek out the masters. There, using centuries-old techniques of glass blowing, the artisans shape the pure, clear crystal. Yet, it is their mastery of the fusion of clear and cobalt crystal that sets them apart… When the newly-formed clear crystal is plunged into a fiery kiln where the cobalt crystal encases its body. Only then can each perfect piece be passed to a master cutter, who with care and precision, painstakingly cuts though the envelope of color to release the pure crystal encased beneath it. This is a medium size paperweight, measuring 106mm tall and 69mm wide. This paperweight is hollow with a flat bottom. The original owner kept very good records of all the pieces in their collection.
