This weight is a bouquet of three pansies on clear ground made by Debbie Tarsitano. The top two petals of the pansies are a rich royal purple. The bottom three petals are a pale yellow with brown stripes radiating from the center of the flowers to the edge of the petals. The stamen is a complex cane of yellow threads surrounding a clear center. All of the pansies are connected by green stems. Additionally, there are green leaves that protrude from behind each flower — five on the largest central pansy, and three on each of the other two. The stems are bound by a red ribbon at the base. There is a signature cane below the stem. The weight is 2.7″ in diameter at its widest point and 2.3″ tall, and is in perfect condition. The base was ground flat, and then concave in the middle, leaving a flat basal ring surrounding a gentle depression. At first glance the signature cane looks like a’Q’, but it is actually a stylized’DT’ in black, surrounded by white with an outer layer of blue. In the image of the signature cane the’T’ is upright. Rotating the image 90 degrees clockwise reveals the’D’. This cane dates the weight fairly tightly, as Debbie only used it between 1978 and 1980, an example of her earlier work. Debbie Ann Tarsitano (1955 -) was born in Valley Stream, Long Island, New York. She and her father Delmo became interested in paperweights in 1971. Working independently in their same home studio they taught themselves and each other the craft of lampwork design and encasement. Their first successful paperweights were made in 1976, and by 1979 making paperweights became their full time profession. Debbie continued to make paperweights and other sculptural glass pieces until about 2005. Since then she has concentrated on more fine art sculptural pieces, mixing her glass working with other media.
