By the late 1800′s, Chico had grown into a charming Victorian community. The quaint atmosphere soon created one of the most distinctive valley towns in California. About 1893, one characteristic home with a carriage house was built in the historic Oriental section of town. Located between Orient Street and Flume Street, this site was destined to play an important role in the story Orient & Flume. Early work of the studio was directed toward recreating the silver-luster of iridescent glass of such turn-of-the-century artists as Tiffany, Steuben, and Loetz. In time, this led to their current creations of intricate, three-dimensional design’s encased in clear glass. By 1973 the carriage house proved to be too small for a rapidly growing business and was relocated to 2161 Park Avenue. The work of Orient & Flume can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian Museum, the Chicago Art Institute, the Chrysler Museum, the Corning Glass Museum and fine stores and galleries throughout the world. Amazing ANTIQUE ENGLISH Bottle Glass with a 3 Layer FLOWER Art Glass Paperweight

A HUGE Antique English Green Bottle Glass Weight with a Three Layer Flower in a Pot. There are several light surface scratches and many tiny flea bites here and there but are very hard to get pictures because they are so small. These old English Bottle Glass paperweights (which are sometimes called Doorstops) are attributed to several makers from the mid 1800s and later. They are also known as “Dump Weights”, and were made with four basic internal designs: Controlled Elongated Bubble Spray, Flowers and Flower Pot made of chalk/foam (like this one). Flowers and Flower Pot made with metallic foil flowers and foam pot, Encased Sulphide/Ceramic Figures. Three layers of “Flowers” rise from a foam “Pot” to form the design in this Antique English Bottle Glass paperweight. The weight is bullet-shaped. It is 4-1/2 in diameter at the widest point and tapers to a large rounded top. It is 5-1/8 high and weighs almost 4-1/2 pounds all by itself. The bottom is not perfectly flat so there is some very slight wobble when the weight is pushed on and typical of these antique Bottle Glass pieces. The pontil is slightly rough to the touch and the bottom does shows considerable wear confirming that the weight is very old. I consider this lovely piece to be in Good Original Antique Condition. Ease check the pictures for further description. The Stands are not part of this sale and were only used here for illustrative purposes. I will Consider any Reasonable Offers. Short History of English Victorian. Dump glass weights were made in England by many different glass factories from the early 19th century. In the early 19th century there was a great demand glass bottles. To avoid wasting this remainder glass, factories began making thousands of these types of weights. Small dump weights were used as paperweights, and larger ones would be used as doorstops. Some of the weights had internal designs; controlled bubbles, complicated motifs made from foil or sulphides. The majority of these Dump Weights were unmarked and have a rough pontil. One of my hobbies is collecting Art Glass Paperweights. A Short History of : The New England Glass Company (NEGC). The New England Glass Company (NEGC) (18181878) of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was established by Amos Binney, Edmund Munroe, Daniel Hastings, and Deming Jarves… On February 16, 1818. It produced both blown and pressed glass objects in a variety of… Colors, which had engraved, cut, etched, and gilded decorations. The firm was one of the first glass companies to use a steam engine to operate its cutting machines, and it built the only oven in the country that could manufacture red lead, a key ingredient in the making of flint glass. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the New England Glass Company was considered one of the leading glasshouses in the United States, best known for its cut and engraved glass. At its start, the company occupied a disused East Cambridge warehouse erected by the recently failed Boston Porcelain and Glass Company. It was fitted with two flint furnaces, 24 steam-operated glass-cutting mills, and a red-lead furnace, which in combination could produce many types of plain, molded, and cut glass. The company charter permitted it to manufacture flint and crown glass of all kinds in the towns of Boston and Cambridge. At that time, about 40 glass factories existed in the United States, though most had few employees. Deming Jarves held one key advantage, which was that he held the American monopoly on red lead (lithage) which was essential for the production of fine lead glass. In 1826, however, Jarves left to found the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. Through the 1820s, the company exhibited at the American Institute Fair, won a Franklin Institute award for “skill and ingenuity, ” and established agencies in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. The company took full advantage of the introduction of pressed glass and its business grew rapidly. Within 25 years, the glass industry was Cambridge’s top employer in 1845 and again in 1855, when two companies, New England and Bay State, each employed more than 500 people. Vaupel (1824 – 1903), who joined New England Glass in 1856, led its creation in the 1860s and 1870s of high-quality cut and engraved products, including very fine paperweights. In 1877 the company’s directors withdrew from active participation, leasing the property to William Libbey, their agent since 1870. Libbey took over the company in 1878 and renamed it the New England Glass Works, Wm. Libbey & Sons Props. Edward Drummond Libbey moved the company to Toledo, Ohio. In 1892, the name was changed to The Libbey Glass Company[4] and ultimately became part of Libbey-Owens-Ford. One of my hobbies is collecting Art Glass Paperweights.
