OUTSTANDING and RARE ANTIQUE Millville ” HOME SWEET HOME ” Art Glass Paperweight PLAQUE on resting on a thin layer of pastel colored splatter glass. (Circa 1880 – 1910). I only see two minor flaws with this lovely paperweight and that is it does have floating debris over the log cabin in the center, see 2nd and 3rd picture and the plaque does show a few hair line cracks but these flaws occurred when this piece was made back in the late 1800′s. It also has a double layer of pastel splatter glass. It has a slightly concave clear bottom that shows. Shelf ware to the basal rim. It is very rare to have a plaque weight were the letters are not painted on. This one has the “HOME SWEET HOME” Quote in raised letters from the plate used to create this work of art. A Short History of : The New England Glass Company (NEGC). The New England Glass Company (NEGC) (18181878) of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was established by Amos Binney, Edmund Munroe, Daniel Hastings, and Deming Jarves… On February 16, 1818. It produced both blown and pressed glass objects in a variety of… Colors, which had engraved, cut, etched, and gilded decorations. The firm was one of the first glass companies to use a steam engine to operate its cutting machines, and it built the only oven in the country that could manufacture red lead, a key ingredient in the making of flint glass. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the New England Glass Company was considered one of the leading glasshouses in the United States, best known for its cut and engraved glass. At its start, the company occupied a disused East Cambridge warehouse erected by the recently failed Boston Porcelain and Glass Company. It was fitted with two flint furnaces, 24 steam-operated glass-cutting mills, and a red-lead furnace, which in combination could produce many types of plain, molded, and cut glass. The company charter permitted it to manufacture flint and crown glass of all kinds in the towns of Boston and Cambridge. At that time, about 40 glass factories existed in the United States, though most had few employees. Deming Jarves held one key advantage, which was that he held the American monopoly on red lead (lithage) which was essential for the production of fine lead glass. In 1826, however, Jarves left to found the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. Through the 1820s, the company exhibited at the American Institute Fair, won a Franklin Institute award for “skill and ingenuity, ” and established agencies in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. The company took full advantage of the introduction of pressed glass and its business grew rapidly. Within 25 years, the glass industry was Cambridge’s top employer in 1845 and again in 1855, when two companies, New England and Bay State, each employed more than 500 people. Vaupel (1824 – 1903), who joined New England Glass in 1856, led its creation in the 1860s and 1870s of high-quality cut and engraved products, including very fine paperweights. In 1877 the company’s directors withdrew from active participation, leasing the property to William Libbey, their agent since 1870. Libbey took over the company in 1878 and renamed it the New England Glass Works, Wm. Libbey & Sons Props. Edward Drummond Libbey moved the company to Toledo, Ohio. In 1892, the name was changed to The Libbey Glass Company[4] and ultimately became part of Libbey-Owens-Ford. One of my hobbies is collecting Art Glass Paperweights. Rare Vintage Magnum John Degenhart Butterfly Paperweight. Circa 1946 1964

Rare Vintage Magnum John Degenhart Butterfly Paperweight. Circa 1946 – 1964. This is a rare, early Degenhart butterfly paperweight. It features a large butterfly with blue spotted wings and black body flying over a multi-colored frit ground. The wings have four red spots and two green spots. The body has red eyes. Unsigned with an unfinished pontil mark, but I guarantee this paperweight was made by John Degenhart. Examples of this paperweight are found in the two references on Degenhart paperweights. One example is shown on page 99 of the book. Degenhart Glass and Paperweights. American Glass Paperweights and Their Makers. By Jean Melvin (1970), there is a picture on page 49. As described in the Melvin book, the butterfly is crafted of solid [clear glass] crystal and coated with fine glass i. It differs from frit butterflies made by other glass artists in that the design is not set up in a mold. Instead the three dimensional butterfly wings and body are coated with frit. The picture does not do justice to this paperweight. Ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. Charles and John Degenhart started their careers in glass working in glass at the Dalzell, Gilmore & Leighton Company factory in Findlay, Ohio. Charles, born in 1882, started first and then John, born in 1884, started at the age of ten in 1894. In 1901, both joined Cambridge Glass in Cambridge, Ohio. The original paperweight production was an after hours activity at Cambridge Glass by Charles and his two sons in the 1920s. John also produced paperweights to help meet the demand. This was with the approval of the company. Of the two, Charles Degenhart was the more skilled artistically. John retired from Cambridge Glass in 1946 and opened the Crystal Art Glass Company shortly after that. Most of the early production was devoted to paperweights. The factory also produced pressed glass novelties in an incredible range of colors. After John died in 1964, his wife Elizabeth took over production. Prior to that, the paperweights were unsigned. There was also a close association with Zack Boyd and his son Bernard, both of whom worked at Crystal Arts. Today in Cambridge, the Boyd family continues to run Crystal Arts. For more information, you can read about the Degenharts in the books. By Jean Melvin (1967 and 1970) and. Very Large Size : 3 1/8″ diameter by 2 5/8″ high. The bottom is fire finished although the remnants of the pontil mark remain. Condition : Very good condition. Some wear and minor scratches on the dome and base. No chips or cracks. There are bubbles at the edge of each wing, which could be considered a flaw but is not damage. Signature : Unsigned, but I guarantee this to be by John Degenhart. Allan’s Paperweights is owned by Allan Port. If in doubt, please check with me first. Please do not ask me to declare this a gift. The item “Rare Vintage Magnum John Degenhart Butterfly Paperweight. Traders of Lost Art. Rare Vintage Circa 1850 Baccarat Macedoine Scrambled Millefiori 3 Paper weight. Superb Antique Circa 1850 Baccarat Macedoine Scrambled Millefiori 3Paperweight. Baccarat Classical Period (1847). This is a stunning masterpiece. A magnificent, antique, circa 1850, Baccarat, Macedoine, (scrambled) Millefiori 3 paperweight with twin coloured Barbershop canes and lattacino. It features many different sized strips of cut canes that are neatly placed into a rough pattern to form a concave bed. The centre cane is a cobalt blue and white whorl cane with opened ended spiral, a true Baccarat. It also has the cobalt blue and coral red filigree twists set at right angles to one another, abutting in a casual mosaic, again another indication that this paperweight was made by Baccarat. The coloured canes have a real cloudy, moody look to them, further indication of Baccarat and finally the quite typically distinctive baccarat glass profile, that shows a curve that is somewhat flatter on the sides and doesn’t return very far at the base. This exquisite Baccarat paperweight is basically made up of five colours, cobalt blue, coral red, green, yellow and muslin white. Use To Hold Papers, Document Etc.
