Kaziun Red Rope Rose with Bud on Sapphire Ground Paperweight

This weight is a red Sandwich-type rope rose with bud on a sapphire ground. The rose with three sepals is set atop a green stem with two leaves on the left and one on the right. A branching stem on the right ends with a sheathed bud, and has a leaf of its own. A gold foil bee is placed on the top left leaf. The ground is a deep sapphire, although it appears more amethyst in most of the photos due to the transmitted light from the flash. The side view provides the most accurate ground color. The base is ground concave and polished, with a gold foil “K” signature in the center. The weight is 2.3″ in diameter and 1.7″ tall. There are small bubbles along one section of the bud’s stem that can be seen in the closeup photo of the bee. These bubbles are more visible when viewed from the side, almost disappearing when the weight is viewed from the top. (1919 – 1992) has been referred to as the father of the American paperweight renaissance. A self-taught glass worker, he produced some of the finest paperweights ever made over his six decade career. His work rivals the classic French glass houses that he was emulating, and his rediscovery of lost techniques of glass working paved the way for the modern artists of today. Antique Bohemian Doorknob with Concentric Millefiori Handle on clear ground. This is an antique Bohemian doorknob with a millefiori paperweight handle. The handle has two concentric circles of complex canes around a complex two ring center star cane. The entire design consists of complex canes, sometimes complex canes inside complex canes. There is a large amber cane that occurs in the very center and also five times in the inner circle. Each cane has two rings of canes around a complex cane. There is an outer ring of amber floret canes with white centers. Inside is a ring of all white five pointed star canes with outer rings of white. The center cane in this amber cane is a complex cane made up of green and white star canes with a red outer layer. Also in the inner circle are five large red and white complex canes with star canes in the center and a red outer layer. This same cane also occurs nine times in the outer row, alternating with similar blue and white and green and white complex canes. In all a complex design built from a variety of canes with many star canes. The design is well centered, although not perfectly and some canes are tipped or out of place. The hardware portion is in good shape. There is no spindle. Please ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. Bohe mian Glass generally refers to the glass made in the regions that form the border area between the Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany. Most of these areas are now parts of the western Czech Republic. Size : The knob is 1 13/16″ diameter by 2 1/8″ high. Condition : Very good condition for its age. It has a worn area on the face about 7/8 wide (shown in one of the pictures) across plus other scratches. The hardware is worn in places but intact. Signature : Unsigned, but I guarantee this is an antique paperweight from Bohemia. Allan’s Paperweights is owned by Allan Port. If in doubt, please check with me first. Rare Vintage Lewis Kain Blue and White Dahlia Paperweight with Green Ground. This paperweight features wonderful sparkly blue and white striped dahlia flower with leaves and stem placed over an transparent green ground. The flower has many long pointed blue and white striped petals arranged in three layers. The center of the flower is a yellow and white cane. Underneath the transparent green ground is a a partial white layer. The design is reminiscent of antique St. It is signed in the design with Lewis Kain’s LK signature cane. A great addition to any collection of early American studio paperweights. Note : Primitive as this paperweight is, it should be kept in mind that the artist was working at the very beginning of the American studio paperweight period. It has many of the elements that later glass workers would struggle to master. The paperweight is in good condition although there is one small 1/16chip and also some scratches on the side. There are also many bubbles and some areas with black debris in the glass. The paperweight displays well and is offered at a bargain price. Please Note: The stand shown in the pictures is not included with the paperweight. It is shown for illustration only. Note on white glare : Please ignore the white areas, they are glare from the light. Lewis Kain was one of the early pioneers of the modern paperweight movement. He worked in southern New Jersey making small lampwork flower weights in the 1960s and 1970s. His paperweights are hard to find. Small Size : 2 1/4″ diameter by 1 1/2″ high. The bottom is ground flat. The base is ground flat. Signature : Signed with Lewis Kain’s “LK” signature cane in the design. The signature cane is small and distorted. Paul Ysart Red Flower on Blue Stave Basket Ground Paperweight

This weight is a ten petaled red flower by Paul Ysart. The flower is set on a green stem, with three leaves coming from the stem. There is an authentic “PY” signature cane underneath the bottom leaf next to the stem. The base is a stave basket comprised of complex canes; a pale green cross in the center, surrounded by a white cog, surrounded by a royal blue circle. There is a ring of controlled bubbles delicately placed at the inside junction of each pair of staves. The weight is 2.8″ in diameter and 2.1″ tall. The base is fire polished, but there is a rough pontil mark in the depressed center. The weight is in perfect condition. The glass is very clear. The “PY” signature cane was used throughout Ysart’s career from well before 1940 through the 1960s. After 1955, when Paul Jokelson began distributing Ysart’s weights in the United States, the “PY” cane was almost exclusively used for the American imports. This is a stunning weight. Unfortunately, I had a really tough time photographing it, and I’m afraid that the images do not truly capture its beauty. The front image was taken with a flash to control reflections. The two oblique views are one with flash and one without. The back, side, and signature images are all taken without flash. Hopefully, between them, they accurately convey how attractive the weight is in person. His fater Salvador emigrated from Spain to France in 1905 to work in the glass industry there. In 1916 they moved again, to Glasgow, Scotland, and then finally ended up in Perth in 1922. By that time Paul and his brothers, Augustine, Vincent, and Antoine were all accomplished glass makers. Paul began making paperweights in the early 1930s, and was one of the few true pioneers in the modern paperweight renaissance in the 1950s.
