Old Glory John Gentile Paperweight Wheaton Glass Millville NJ Rare Museum Stock

A must have for the local glass enthusiast! No breaks cracks chips or repairs! William Driver, an American sea captain from Massachusetts, bestowed the nickname “Old Glory” to the large American flag he flew during his voyages around the world. After retiring, he moved to Nashville, TN, and carefully hid the flag until the end of the Civil War. He proudly flew “Old Glory” atop the capitol building when the war ended. His flag is now in the Smithsonian. Few people know his story, but his nickname for the flag lives on! Born in Naples, Italy, in 1884, he came to America before WWI. He worked for H. Fry in Rochester, Pennsylvania, and had a long career at the Morgantown Glassware Guild in West Virginia. He and his family opened their own business nearby Sky City in 1947, focusing on paperweight production. Wheaton has one on display in their museum. Please see the photos for overall size and condition. String tag containing provenance can be removed easily.

Millville Umbrella Paperweight Large Antique
millville
Comments Off
Large Antique Millville Umbrella Paperweight. This style of old paperweight is associated with Millville, New Jersey. Examples date from as early as 1860 and continued to be made until about 1912. Many, if not all, were made at the Whitall Tatum factory in Millville. The design consists of a white mushroom shape with a center bubble. Additional colored bits of glass are added and melted into the top. The top is of the mushroom is pushed down with a crimp to form an umbrella shape with ribs or pleats. The design is placed over a white frit ground. This paperweight has minor flaws including surface scratches and an abraded area on the side, but displays beautifully. The design is well executed and displays many of the typical Millville umbrella characteristics. Please Note: The stand shown in the pictures is not included with the paperweight. It is shown for illustration only. Note on white glare : Please ignore the white areas, they are glare from the light. The umbrella shaped weights were originally modeled to resemble the wild tiger lily of Southern New Jersey. You can read about umbrella weights from Millville in the book Old Glass Paperweights of Southern New Jersey: An American Folk Art by Clarence A. It is not possible to identify the exact maker, but John Ruhlander, Emil Stanger, Marcus Kuntz, and Horace Rhubarth, and Ralph Barber are all known to have made weights of this style. Sometimes the style is also used as part of an inkwell or other object. Large Size : Just over 3″ diameter by just under 2 3/4″ high. The base is ground flat. Condition : Very good condition. It has several scratches on the side, the longest of which is 1 long (see picture). There is also one area that is abraded – maybe it was placed on its side when still hot. Some wear on the base. No chips or cracks. Allan’s Paperweights is owned by Allan Port. If in doubt, please check with me first. Please do not ask me to declare this a gift.

Antique Millville Wig Holder Glass Art Footed Paperweight Pedestal Tutti Frutti
antique
Comments Off
This lovely wig holder / pedestal paperweight has a colorful tutti frutti floral look. From what we can gather, we believe this is a Millville, NJ piece with its five ice pick bubbles and similar size and shaping of others attributed to the brand. In good antique condition–wear is consistent with age and use. There is a very small chip on the side of the globe. It is nearly impossible to see with the busy design, and it clearly does not affect the beauty of this piece. The stem is clouded. We believe this was intentional. The bottom of the holder has the most expected wear. A rare, fun find! Please see photos for more detail.

Millville Confetti Umbrella Paperweight Whitall Tatum antique South Jersey Glass

Antique Millville Confetti Umbrella Paperweight Whitall Tatum circa 1900-12 Mariah’s Ring South Jersey Glass. Millville is well known as being one of the centers of 19. Century South Jersey glass making. Paperweights such as this were produced after-hours at Whitall Tatum, made after a glassworker had completed making his daily quota of laboratory or pharmaceutical ware. The clear glass used at Whitall Tatum was ideal for the production of paperweights. Many of the workers attempted to make such pieces, with limited levels of success. This all came to a crashing halt about 1912 when someone got greedy and opened the annealing oven where newly manufactured paperweights were cooling, with the intent to steal them. When the thief let the cool air into the annealing oven, it caused considerable breakage to the company glass pieces tempering in the same oven. This weight is in excellent condition. It stands 3¾ inches tall and has a diameter of 3 1/2 inches. The umbrella has a white frit colored base for the flower and sports pink, cobalt blue, shades of yellow and red “speckled” frit covering the top of the flower. The umbrella flower has been pulled down quite low on the weight. It has a round concave facet on the top with a center air bubble beneath it, and a pontil mark on the base. I see no damage whatsoever. An excellent example of this fine piece of South Jersey folk art. Also see my books. Last Links to the Past 20. Century South Jersey Glass Volume 1 – Clevenger Brothers. Antique MILLVILLE PINK COLORED RAVENNA UPRIGHT LILY Art Glass Paperweight with Elongated Controlled Bubbles. (Circa Pre 1900) I do see one ding on the lower side area, see Yellow circle in the last picture #6. It does have a few light scratches and a few tiny flea bites hear and there but not that bad at all for it’s age. Pink is one of the hardest colors to locate in these Ravenna Lily’s. The motif also shows the 5 Elongated Controlled Bubbles are rising from the Turquoise Colored Splatter Glass Umbrella Shape at the base. I consider this Amazing Work of Art to be in Very Good. These Original Antique Millville Ravenna Lily Flowers are getting harder and harder to locate when you want to add one to your collection. Millville Glass Company /. Was know as one of the Largest Glass Makers in the Millville, NJ area (Circa 1880) and likewise the entire country. Southern New Jersey has been called “The Cradle of American Glass” for the same reason that it could be called The Cradle of American Asparagus Farming. There’s a lot of sand in the soil, and sand (silica) is what is melted to make glass. Many of the glass makers migrated to this area from Europe in and around the late 1790s thru the mid 1800s. There were so many in this area at the time, New England Glass, Sandwich, Boston, Gillinder, Pairpoint and Millville just to name a few. Glass factories have been here for over 200 years, but it wasn’t until the late 1960s that someone decided to call attention to it. That someone was Frank Wheaton Jr. Grandson of the founder of Wheaton Industries, one of the biggest companies in glassmaking. One of my hobbies is collecting Art Glass Paperweights.
