Antique 1890′s Glass Paperweight RARE Albert Graeser Woodmen of the World Roses. Portrait and advertising paperweights were dome glass paperweights first made in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania using a process patented in 1882 by William H. The portrait paperweights contained pictures of ordinary people reproduced on a milk glass. Disk and encased within clear glass. This same process was also used to produce paperweights with the owner’s name encased or an advertisement of a business or product. Graeser patented a different process for making advertising paperweights in 1892. The Graeser process involved sealing an image to the underside of a rectangular glass blank. Using a milk glass or enamel-like glaze. Many paperweights of the late 19th century are marked either J. Abrams or Barnes and Abrams and may list either the 1882 Maxwell or 1892 Graeser patent date. The W OF W organization was founded in 1890 in Omaha, Nebraska. By Joseph Cullen Root. Root founded Modern Woodmen of America. (MWA) in Lyons, Iowa. In 1883, after hearing a sermon about “pioneer woodsmen clearing away the forest to provide for their families”. Taking his own surname to heart, he wanted to start a society that “would clear away problems of financial security for its members”. After internal dissension within the MWA, Root was ejected from the organization that he had founded. When moving to Omaha, Root decided to start again with a new group he called the Modern Woodmen of the World. He soon dropped the “Modern”, and the organization became “Woodmen of the World”. Three iconic green and pink roses appear in a spaced row at the center of the design. An underlying layer of parallel rows of latticinio supports the design.

ANTIQUE CLICHY FACETED CONCENTRIC MILLEFIORI PAPERWEIGHT WITH 11 ROSES. Antique Clichy Faceted Concentric Millefiori Paperweight with 11 roses. This wonderful antique Clichy concentric millefiori paperweight has a classic arrangement of three concentric rings of complex millefiori around a blue pastry mold cane. The inner ring has eleven green and white roses. The second ring consists of fifteen pink pastry mold canes. The outer ring has an alternating pattern of 24 canes with six purple pastry mold canes and 18 pink and green canes. The 18 pink and green complex canes resemble the color of pink and green roses. In all, there are 51 millefiori canes over a clear ground. The canes are intricate and very colorful. See the close-up picture for more detail. There are six side facets and a top facet. Clichy paperweights are highly sought after by collectors for their complex canes and brilliant colors. Clichy paperweights with rose canes are especially desirable. The Clichy factory was founded at Billancourt near Paris in 1837. Shortly after that it moved to Clichy-la-Garenne, which gave the factory its best known name. They stayed in operation until about the 1870s. Size: 2 5/8″ diameter by 1 3/4″ high. The base is ground concave. Condition: Very good condition. There are scratches and small chips on the body and chips on some of the facets, but no cracks and no impact marks. There is wear on the base. There is plenty of glass and the paperweight could be restored, but I chose not to do so. Signature: Unsigned but I guarantee this to be an authentic antique Clichy paperweight. Execution: Very good execution. The design is well centered. There are some bubbles in the glass. Allan’s Paperweights is owned by Allan Port. It is packed with 37 spectacular complex Millefiori Canes on clear ground, and features. 5 different beautiful Clichy. It measures approx 2 7/8″ in diameter and just over 2″ high. It weighs 1 lb. It has some scratches, a few hitmarks and some tiny nicks and fleabites on the dome and a few little shallow nicks and minor surface wear on the base… We are buyers, sellers and collectors of vintage marbles. One of MY Favorite Paperweights!! Just Beautiful, & full of Surprises too! It’s Actually looking More like a nice ClosePackthan a”scrambled’, It’s a Macedonia if Anything on a bits ground, almost jasper-like, but not so much. 2 1/4″×1 /11/16″. From the 4 DIFFERENT Roses, 1 Is MAROON, on the Center in bottom pic. A slice of This Rose can be seen in Upper right quadrant, naking it complete. Also looking like a Purple Cabbage head cut in half, then a piece taken off for a salad. May be kinda hard to see with the sun light reflecting, look hard. Another HIDDEN Rose, MAYBE in the center of a white & green rose, it’s hard for me to be sure, but it sure looks like it, that would make 5 roses IF Confirmed! . Many dozens if pastry mold millifiori canes as well as Complex Cane setups also. Moss Canes, 3 big different roses on the top, pink& green, White & Green with a Possible pink one hidden in center, & a White& Red Rose grace the topside, While a MAROON ROSE hides in center of the bottom, as seen through the base pic. So many Canes Varieties, It’s got over 4 dozen millifiori canes to keep you occupied for a Long Time! It almost seems to be a closepack! Hollow Rod cane bundles in a crimp pastrymold cane is TOO COOL a concept to be seen looks like honeycomb canes. I probably haven’t found All of its little obscure neat things, Im Sure. A Collectors Piece, for sure! The panelled design shows making up of 4 weights, & I have 1 other that is another of this 4 piece set, I Believe! My Other 1 is seen in Kulles’how to i.
