In the early 1800′s, Chico was an important center for gold mining, railroad construction and ranching. By the late 1800′s, Chico had grown into a charming Victorian community. The quaint atmosphere soon created one of the most distinctive valley towns in California. About 1893, one characteristic home with a carriage house was built in the historic Oriental section of town. Located between Orient Street and Flume Street, this site was destined to play an important role in the story Orient & Flume. Early work of the studio was directed toward recreating the silver-luster of iridescent glass of such turn-of-the-century artists as Tiffany, Steuben, and Loetz. In time, this led to their current creations of intricate, three-dimensional design’s encased in clear glass. By 1973 the carriage house proved to be too small for a rapidly growing business and was relocated to 2161 Park Avenue. The work of Orient & Flume can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian Museum, the Chicago Art Institute, the Chrysler Museum, the Corning Glass Museum and fine stores and galleries throughout the world. SCARCE and LOVELY Ed Rithner Vintage RAINBOW COLORED CANDY CANES Paperweight

LOVELY and Rare Vintage Frit RAINBOW COLORED CANDY CANES Art Glass Paperweight by Edward Rithner. (Circa 1910 – 1935) I see some gather lines which are typical of weights from this era. I see a few tiny flea bites and a few light scratches and most are hard to see. I see several tiny controlled bubbles here and there that add to the delicate motif. All of the Colorful Candy Cane Rods are gently resting on a Wonderful Shade of Cobalt Blue Frit Glass. This Amazing Work of Art Glass is much better seen in person because the pictures do not do it justice. These Frit Designs by Rithner are Very Scare and hard to come by. He may have been trying to copy the Baccarat Macedoine type weights. I consider this Amazing Work of Art to be in Very Good Original Vintage Condition. It has a slightly concave frosted bottom that shows some normal shelf wear to the basal rim. This is a Magnum Size Paperweight and it Measures 3″ Diameter by 2 1/4″ Tall. Selman is known worldwide for his expertise in the field of Art Glass Paperweights and in 2001, Selman was awarded the honor of being named by the Paperweight Collectors Association, one of the Top Ten People of the 20. Century to influence the paperweight art form. Gaskills collection was considered to be one of the largest gatherings of Antique American Art Glass Paperweights known to be in private hands. In 2009 a family member took possession of the entire collection and it went safely and quietly into storage for approximately 6 years, from 2009 to 2015. Short History of Mr. John became well known in the world of glass paperweights. John started the glass business in 1947 in Star City, West Virginia. He mainly catered to the tourist trade but over the decades that he worked with glass he perfected his paperweight trade skills and produced some very nice, interesting, and technically challenging paperweights. He was one of the first American paperweight artists to incorporate snakes and lizards. He worked with glassmaker Henry C. Johnson who made the snakes that John encased in glass. When John died in 2006, the company closed it’s doors shortly thereafter. One of my hobbies is collecting Art Glass Paperweights. Vintage, artistic, unique, showy and probably not scarce, people love them and hang onto them. Making them’hard to find’. Harvey johnson from michigan made glass lampworked pieces which he had john gentile of west virginia encase. They were early workers mentioned in jean melvins’american glass paperweights and their makers’ from 1967. They produced a weight that is admirable as the ones produced today. The motif is a simple large somewhat cartoonish’beetle’bug. Magnum size at 3 5/8diameter and 2 1/4 in height. Finely finished base with a checkerboard / cross hatch design cut across the entire base. There is a “JG” signature under the frit ground and Harvey Johnson’s “J” is placed under the head of the beetle. Excellent glass and excellent condition. This particular weight is one of the finest from this pair of workers that i have seen. The item “Scarce glass paperweight vintage. Studio.
