Here is a lovely large Antique Papier Mache Doll. The doll’s shoulderhead is made of papier mache and marked with a large number 3 over the top of a 0 on the side of the dolls head. The doll measures 21 long and has an excelsior stuffed body. Sadly the left arm is missing but the right arm is still hanging on with some broken fingertips and both feet are also there. The hand and both feet are made of heavy plaster. I love the doll’s large blue paperweight glass eyes. You will notice around both eyes there is is a crack wrapping around both eyes (see picture). She has wonderful feathered painted brows, painted upper and lower eyelashes, warm blush pink cheeks, pink lips, with a small dimple in her chin. She still has a tuft of mohair coming out of the top of her head. The doll comes with a couple pieces of handmade antique doll clothing. All of the clothing is old and showing signs of wear and tear. The doll comes from a smoke-free home. Please let me know if you have any questions. Fresh from a local estate is an original signed and dated Dominick Labino paperweight vase. This is single greenish color glass with a 3/4 inch opening at the top. Putting a finger in the hole one can feel the irregular shapes of the bulbous interior Labino fabricated into the glass to make the design. This is from his earlier studio work and dated 1969. The weight is about 5 inches in diameter, is about 4 1/2 inches tall, and weighs over 5 1/2 pounds. Here is a rare opportunity to own a very unusual and stylistic piece from an internationally famous glass artisan. O chips, cracks, or repairs. The lit base is for display only and is not included or for sale. The last 2 photos show the weight without the stand’s light. The Labino signature and date are dead center of the ground concave pontil. This is truly a fascinating piece of art. (19101987) was an internationally known scientist, inventor, artist and master craftsman in. Labino’s art works in glass are in the permanent collections of more than 100 museums throughout the world. Labino held over 60 glass-oriented patents in the United States. Labino was trained as an engineer at the. Carnegie Institute of Technology. And began his professional career at. A glass manufacturing plant in Clarion, Pennsylvania. In 1944, Dominick left Owens-Illinois. To pursue the fiber glass industry with long-time business partner and Executive VP of I-O, Randolph H Barnard. Barnard formed Glass Fibers, Inc. In Toledo, Labino was the head of Research and Development. Acquired Glass Fibers, Inc. Creating Johns-Manville’s modern fiber glass division. Labino stayed on as Vice President and Director of Research and development until his retirement in 1965. Labino continued to serve as a research consultant until 1975. Labino was an innovator in the processes and machines used in forming glass fibers. Three of his inventions employing fiberglass. Were used in the Gemini. To insulate them against extreme temperatures. According to art historian Martha Drexler Lynn, Labino had a life-long love of tools, inventing and problem-solving which he coupled with a passion for artistic endeavors… His interest in blowing glass began in the 1930s, when he ran the Owens-Illinois milk bottling plant. There he had a laboratory in which he created glass formulas. In 1940, his predecessor at the plant, Ben Alderson, showed Labino how to blow glass. Labino later blew glass as a hobby; at Johns-Manville he built a home glass furnace at which to pursue the craft. An early project was a glass paperweight that he created in 1958 for a friend’s retirement. By 1960 he had melted a batch of glass and created a primitive blowpipe. Labino and Harvey Littleton, with whom Labino would stage a ground-breaking glassblowing workshop at the Toledo Museum of Art in 1962, met during the time that Littleton was a ceramics instructor at the Toledo Museum of Art School of Design (1949 to 1951) and Labino was taking evening craft classes there. Labino’s interest in Studio glass. Grew out of his frustration with industry. In 1963 Labino set up his own glass studio on his farm near Grand Rapids, Ohio. He designed glass-blowing and finishing tools; built his own furnaces and annealing ovens; and began freehand blowing with molten glass. Through his research and development of new technologies, like the fusing of colors, he provided artists with the methods and tools to create glass as art in their own studios, no longer making it necessary to involve glass factories in their creative process. Labino opened his studio under the auspices of the Toledo Museum of Art School of Design in 1966 and 1967 to present three workshops. His interest in the education of fine artists in glass-working materials and techniques was furthered by the publication of his book Visual Art in Glass W. Brown Company, publishers in 1967. Labino received an honorary doctorate from Bowling Green State University. In 1971 he received the Governor’s Award for the Art, State of Ohio, and was presented with the first Ohio Art Council award for his contribution to the development of molten glass as a fine art form. Labino received the Toledo Glass and Ceramic Award in 1972, and was presented with the Rakow Award for Excellence in Glass by the Corning Museum of Glass in 1985. Labino received the Steuben Phoenix Award in 1977 for his contributions both to the production of industrial glass and to the use of glass in fine art. Some of the national and international museums that have collected Dominick Labino’s art work in glass include: Toledo Museum of Art. Toledo, Ohio; Cleveland Museum of Art. Cleveland, Ohio; Art Institute of Chicago. Chicago, Illinois; Corning Museum of Glass. Corning, New York; Chrysler Museum of Art. Norfolk, Virginia; Fowler Museum. Los Angeles, California; Smithsonian Institution. Victoria & Albert Museum. London, England; Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf, Germany; National Glasmuseum, Leerdam. The Netherlands; Pilkington Glass Museum, England and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe. He died at his home in Grand Rapids, Ohio. On January 11, 1987 aged 76. Decorative Glass dome vase signed stamped by unknown. There is no visible damage, cracks or crazing and is in overall very good to excellent condition. However, there are some air bubbles in the glass from what appears to be the original manufacturing it and there is a little scuffing of the paint along the rim from what appears to be picking it up over the years. And there are some light scratches on it that are difficult to see. Glass appears to be hand blown and hand painted. Signed/stamped on the bottom/top of it, however, I cannot make out the name. It looks like this item can be used as a dome or a small vase by turning it upside down/right side up. Item measures approximately 7.25″ H X 5 1/2″ W and weighs approximately 12 oz. This Art Glass Paperweight is from the late William Gaskills Cherished Collection. Gaskill was a former President of the National Paperweight Collectors Association (PCA) and an avid and very astute Art Glass Paperweight Collector. After His passing, his collection was on loan (for approximately 3 years from 2006 to 2009) to the Museum of American Glass (Wheaton Village) in Millville, NJ, which is now known as Wheaton Village Arts and Cultural Center. Gaskills highly regarded and very extensive Art Glass Paperweight Collection was on display in their most prominent area of the Museum at that time. Just prior to being put on display at the Museum, Lawrence Selman of the Renown L. Selman was commissioned to do an appraisal of the entire collection. Selman is known worldwide for his expertise in the field of Art Glass Paperweights and in 2001, Selman was awarded the honor of being named by the Paperweight Collectors Association, one of the Top Ten People of the 20. Century to influence the paperweight art form. Gaskills collection was considered to be one of the largest gatherings of Antique American Art Glass Paperweights known to be in private hands. In 2009 a family member took possession of the entire collection and it went safely and quietly into storage for approximately 6 years, from 2009 to 2015. In 2016 I was very proud and honored to have had the opportunity to acquire a large portion of Mr. Gaskills Wonderful and Cherished Art Glass Paperweight Collection. Southern New Jersey has been called “The Cradle of American Glass” for the same reason that it could be called The Cradle of American Asparagus Farming. There’s a lot of sand in the soil, and sand (silica) is what is melted to make glass. Glass factories have been here for over 200 years, but it wasn’t until the late 1960s that someone decided to call attention to it. That someone was Frank Wheaton Jr. Grandson of the founder of Wheaton Industries, one of the biggest companies in glassmaking. Frank had visited the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, and was upset to see that many of its exhibits had come from southern New Jersey. That stuff has become the nucleus of what is now the largest museum of American glass anywhere. One of my hobbies is collecting Art Glass Paperweights. I’m a member of several paperweight clubs throughout the country. Please follow me so you won’t miss any of my fabulous items. Pictures are used as part of my descriptions.
